A Dominican priest of the italian renaisance, Savonarola preached that the end of the world was imminent, called the Pope Alexander IV the antichrist and was widely popular with renaissance florentines.

Lorenzo (The Magnificient) Medici

Lorenzo was the handsome, intelligent grandson of Cosimo Medici, who had set his family up as master manipulators of the renaissance Florentine republic. The family's power base was in banking and the Medici bank, for a time, handled the money for the Catholic Church. However when Lorenzo refused a loan to Pope Sixtus IV, the Pope initiated a conspiracy to kill Lorenzo and his younger brother, Juliano, successfully killing the later. The Pope intended to send out the king of Naples to humble Florence after this failed attempt on Lorenzo's life but Lorenzo rode to Naples, risking his life to meet with the king, successfully pleading his case and saving the city.

Henry VIII

Henry was like a bad ass, medieval version of Orson Welles - "He ran through women and ate like a beast". He had almost every Chancellor who ever worked for him executed, some highlights include Cardinal Woolsey, Thomas Moore and Oliver Cromwell. Henry defied the power of the pope, setting himself up as the supreme head of the church in England, founding the Anglican church. He is also considered the grandfather of the British Navy.

Vlad The Impaler

Before he was the basis for Bram Stoker's Dracula, Vlad Tepes was christian Europe's frontline defense against the expanding power of the Muslim Turks, who in 1453, had just recently toppled the ancient Byzantine empire. Fleeing a Turkish advance, Vlad engaged in a scorched earth policy as he retreated, at one point leaving a field of impaled bodies to greet the oncoming Mohammed II. When confronted with the scene, Mohammed is said to have remarked in horror, "What can one do against a man who does these things?". Vlad is also said to have dined, on occasion, in the presence of his impaled victims.

I'm going to Applied Arts' launch party for their Illustration annual tonight at 6:30. My Boston Globe Illustrations of Abraham Lincoln will be on display along with other award winning entries.

The exhibit will be open again to the public on Friday, July 13 from 10am-3pm at Toronto's Studio One.

Well, the secret's out. Mayor Miller held a press conference announcing this year's Nuit Blanche at the Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA) yesterday. This year's artists and their projects have been announced. So, here it is: Secular Confession Booth, the event I'll be running (with Jesse Ewles) at this year's Nuit Blanche. Below is the press copy for the event.

"Do you have a troubled conscience? Introducing the world's first Secular Confession Booth - its cheaper than a shrink with no possibility of eternal damnation. Secular Confession Booth offers mature, attentive personnel who will hear your confession. . . judgment free and of course, what's said in the booth stays in the booth."

My idea for a Nuit Blanche exhibit has just been short-listed. Nuit Blanche is a city-wide art exhibit that will run all night on October 1. Last year's show was the best thing I've ever see Toronto put on. I can't say what my own idea is yet - its still top secret. My collaborator Jesse Ewles and I are just sending some further clarifications to the city. If they like what they hear, we'll be running an installation in Zone A. Keep your fingers crossed

Applied Arts Awards Annual

I've just received word that my Lincoln series (done for Boston globe) will be in July's Applied Arts' Photography/Illustration awards annual. The awards this year will have an accompanying exhibit. I'll post more about this in the coming months.

Holy man I'm busy! I've gotten some pretty good jobs lately. More on that score later. Here is a look at a piece I finished a week or two ago for Maisonneuve magazine. Maisonneuve and I have a great history together. It was for a series of illustrations of past canadian Prime Ministers that I did for Maisonneuve, that I won Gold at 2003's National Magazine Awards. I'm really happy to be doing new work with them and I can't wait to see it in print. Keep an eye out for the new issue.

I'm pretty busy with illustration these days. The Boston Globe has hired me again to do the front of the book review section. I should be done in the next few days. Last night

Picture This was awesome last night! After a slow but steady start, the night went off like gangbusters. Dr Jesus performed first and was the funniest thing I've ever seen put to music. The first audience test of my first video collaboration with Lee Stringle and Jesse Ewles was a big hit. We'll be posting it on youTube and all over the internet soon... of course I'll post it here as well. The video is tentatively called 'Tifa's Yearning'. Dj Le French Toast, played some Nine Inch Nails songs injected with other, lesser pop tunes. It sure got people dancing though. I can't wait for next month's show.

Pontiac Quarterly

I was at Pontiac Quarterly yesterday night in the basement of The Drake Hotel on Queen West. Its a live magazine; authors read their articles live to the crowd. There's some live art and music, an advise column, classifieds, etc. I've been to a couple in the past, this one was by far the funniest. They were playing the movie Tremors in the background... that says a lot right there. The always magnetizing Downtown Cheryl Brown read a few diary exerpts, the most crowd pleasing one being about poo and peanut butter. Everyone laughs at poo. Ed Keenan, who writes the editorial column in Eye weekly that I got to illustrate not too long ago, read a written apology for his own sexually deviant behaviour. Good times. The next one is in April. I'll be there.

I just finished my first illustration for my favourite magazine; Spacing. For those who don't know, Spacing is a Toronto magazine about the city's urban planning, politics, street art and public space in general. Its a big part of the new optimistic spirit of Toronto. I'm really excited to finally work with them and hope to do more in the future. The new issue comes out in early february. Here's a sneak peek at my contribution. Click to enlarge.

A Thought

I read Jane Jacobs' 'The Nature Of Economies' not too long ago and it got me thinking about man made processes like the march of economies and how they can mimic organic processes in the natural world, like evolution. I'm not positive I understood Jacobs on every point, but a lot of her thoughts about the nature of economies are just as applicable to the art world. The telescopic nature of evolution is a good example. Evolution on this planet started in broad strokes, setting up the most basic classifications (reptile, mammal, insect, etc.) Now that we've got those nailed down, its seems to have become mostly a matter of increasingly subtle fine tuning. In a general way, this can look a lot like art... especially modern art. In the first half of the 20th century we nailed down basic categories: abstract, surrealist, realist, conceptual, etc.. Now we're fleshing out and fine tuning those categories. I suppose it will take a drastic change in environment or worldview to produce any more fundamental changes. Are computers and the internet that kind of change? Maybe the participatory nature of artists like Toronto's Darren O'Donnell and others hints at a possibly new category? I don't know. Just thinking out loud.

This is the wrapper to a choclate bar my girlfriend, Cheryl bought me. I have not altered this in photoshop in any way. I seem to have these Mr.Sparkle moments more and more. Judging by my first name you'd have to assume I owned a pool cleaning company, a line of spring jackets and now a choclate bar with my face on it. I had to eat it to get it flat for scanning. The nuts in the bar didn't so much sit as float in the choclate. Its a very tasty bar.

'Picture This'

The poster for this month's 'Picture This' event at the Tranzac has just been completed. Recognize the illustrator? My good friend Lee Stringle, did the graphic design. 'Picture This' has been billed as an art/music collision. Those of us who are involved month to month are trying our hardest to find new ways to live up to that. Experimenting with the venue's layout is a big theme. This month we're really going to try and move the performers from the stage, into the audience and move the audience on to the stage a little. There will be a bunch of talented artists and musicians, including yours truly. This month's event is on Friday, Jan.19th -Doors open at 8pm. Come check it out.
